The Department of Civil Engineering was established in the year 2009 with an intake of 60 students. Also PG Courses M.E Structural Engineering and Environmental Engineering were introduced in the academic year of 2013 – 14 & 2014 – 15 respectively with yearly intake of 18 students. Now the Intake has been increased as 30 from the academic year 2022-23. The Department of Civil Engineering graduates will have a mastery of fundamental knowledge, problem solving skills, Engineering experimental abilities, and design capabilities necessary for entering Civil Engineering career and/or graduate school.
It is aimed to produce graduates who have the knowledge and skills necessary for identifying and assessing design alternatives and the related to social, economic, environmental, and public safety impacts. Civil Engineering includes the Planning, Design, Construction, Maintenance, and operation of large and permanent Engineering projects of our civilization. Civil Engineers are in demand wherever there are people. The major subdivisions of Civil Engineering are Structural, Geotechnical, Environmental, Water resources, and Transportation Engineering.
The Civil Engineer is responsible for major projects such as bridges, large buildings, dams, harbor works, municipal water supply, sanitation facilities, streets, highways, and other transportation facilities. On many projects, Civil Engineers work in close cooperation with Engineers and Scientists from other fields. The Department is organizing various Value added courses like Auto CAD, Revit Architecture, Primavera and Staad Pro etc.

It gives me immense pleasure to lead the Department of Civil Engineering. The Department was established in the year 2009 to cater the ever increasing demand of Civil Engineers in industry and academia and to serve all concerned to their fullest expectations. M.E Structural Engineering in the Year 2013 and M.E Environmental Engineering in the Year 2014 have been started to make the students to get specialized. The students are groomed to become full fledged professionals with blend of up-to-date technical knowledge and field experience gained during their Internship.
The greatest asset of the Civil Engineering Department is its highly motivated and experienced faculties. The available diversity of expertise of the faculty prepares the students to work in Global Multicultural Environment. To bring synergy in its various activities, the Department is organized to make students familiar in three streams:
Structural Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. We continuously strive to make students aware of the latest technological developments by imparting quality education and organizing various departmental activities such as workshops, seminars, Industrial Guest lecture, Hands on training, Webinar, Symposium, Skill Development Programs etc. Industrial visits and Internship provide a complete practical exposure to our students. MOU with reputed Construction firms create wide opportunities for conducting Collaborative technical activities, Internships and lead to provide suitable Placements. Our Practical oriented teaching methodology helps for their holistic development as a Professional Engineer.
Various Emerging fields like Advanced Foundation Techniques, Non Destructive Techniques, GIS and Remote Sensing, Industrial Pollution Control and Audit etc enhance more field opportunities. The framework of the programs provides ample opportunities to the students to train themselves as researcher, thinker, job-seeker, entrepreneur, or innovator based on their passion. Highly successful alumni prove our academic excellence. They are well placed as Senior Project Executive Planners, Specification Consultants, Structural Designers, Quantity Surveyors etc. Ample opportunities are created to the students to meet the challenges of Construction Industrial Scenario. The value based education drives our students to become more competitive and Quality oriented successful leaders of tomorrow.

Programme Outcomes (POs)
Program Outcome describe the knowledge, skills and attitudes the students should have at the end of a four year engineering program.
Engineering Graduates will be able to:
- Engineering Knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
- Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
- Design / Development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
- Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
- Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
- The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
- Environment and Sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
- Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.

To imbibe the skills on supervising, co-ordinating guiding leading and decision making in the minds of Civil Engineering students for completing infrastructure projects in time.

World Environment Day
Green Club & Swachh Bharat of Excel Engineering College organised the following activities in view of “World Environment Day” on June 5 2023 in association with IIC & NSS.
Awareness talk on sustainable practices and mission LIFE and also promoting LIFE actions.
Also students had taken pledge for implementing green actions in their day to day life by respective Chief Mentors.
Campus Cleaning was done by NSS volunteers. Waste plastics were collected and handed over to maintenance team.
Posters representing Don’t Waste Food , Keep Working Place Clean,etc was displayed in hostel , mess, canteen, office and main places by student volunteers.
Achieving Problem – Solution fit and Product – Market fit in current business environment
Excel Engineering College Entrepreneurship Development Cell in association with Department of Civil Engineering organised a workshop on “Achieving Problem – Solution fit and Product – Market fit in current business environment”.
On this occasion,
Mr Naveen Manickam, M/S Naveen Manickam Enterprises, Entrepreneurship Development and Innovation Institute, Chennai has addressed on the Business plan, long term goals, Starting a business, Identifying problems, Finding suitable solution, Product quality, Marketing strategies, Use of Social media for Business growth and Sustainability of long term goals. Our students and 31 outside participants attended the Workshop enthusiastically. In these practical hands on session, the students interacted and clarified their doubts.
The Chief Guest issued the Certificates to the participants.
The Coordinators Prof D. Mythili and K. Poornima have done all the needful arrangements for the successful conduct of the workshop.
Activity 1
Excel Engineering College & Entrepreneurship Development Cell organized a comprehensive workshop titled “Entrepreneurship Skill, Attitude, and Behavior Development” on February 29, 2024, at the esteemed Kandasamy Hall. Dr. P. Loganathan, an accomplished Associate Professor in Civil Engineering, played a pivotal role as the Faculty Coordinator, ensuring the seamless execution of the event.The workshop was enriched by the expertise of two distinguished Resource Persons: Prof. Mohan Kumar Iyer, MBA, and Prof. Mohanasundaram, MBA. Drawing from their extensive experience and knowledge, they delivered insightful keynotes and practical guidance on various aspects of entrepreneurship. Topics covered included cultivating entrepreneurial skills, fostering the right attitudes, and nurturing behaviors conducive to entrepreneurial success. Participants benefited greatly from the interactive sessions, where they had the opportunity to engage with the resource persons, ask questions, and share experiences. Through real-life examples and case studies, the workshop provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities in the entrepreneurial landscape.Attendees left the workshop inspired and equipped with practical strategies to enhance their entrepreneurial journey. The event served as a platform for fostering innovation, collaboration, and the development of aspiring entrepreneurs within the Excel Engineering College community. Around 120 students participated in it.
Activity 2
Excel Engineering College, Excel Foundation Technology Business Incubator, Department of Civil Engineering, Entrepreneurship Development Cell, Institution Innovation Council jointly organized an industrial Guest Lecture on “The Role of Technology in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals” on 28.10.2023 at APJ Hall.
On this occasion, Dr S. Madankumar, Assistant Engineer/TNEB, Mettur Thermal Power Station I, Chairman IGEN, Green 9 addressed on 17 Sustainable Development Goals to transform our world. The students of Civil Engineering and MBA actively participated and interacted with Chief Guest.

CARVE 24, a National levaI Technical Symposium
Our II year Civil Engineering students participated in CARVE 24, a National levaI Technical Symposium conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, Sona College of Technology, Salem.
Kiruthika and Kesavan have won the Third Prize and a cash award of Rs.1000 in the Poster Presentation. Helen Ross, Ankit Kumar, Ranjeet Kumar, Ritesh Kumar Dev, and Hrithik Kumar participated in the Paper Presentation.

Industrial Visit to Ooty
Excel Engineering College Department of Civil Engineering 72 Students of II, III and final year were accompanied by 4 faculty members for an industrial visit to Ooty on 13.10.2023. Our department recently took an exciting trip to Ooty to explore real-world civil engineering projects with InfraArch Construction. It was an incredible learning experience that allowed us to delve into the intricacies of construction in hilly terrain.
🌿 We witnessed the art of foundation works amidst nature’s challenges.
🔍 Soil testing was a fascinating journey into understanding the earth beneath our feet.
🏔 Discovering how to improve soil characteristics was both enlightening and vital.
The impact of landslides and how to prevent them left us awe-inspired.
🧱 We even got hands-on with retaining wall construction techniques.
🏠 Understanding stability characteristics was an eye-opener.
Code Cracking Event
Code Cracking event has been conducted for the III, IV Year students on 23.09.2023 by Mr.S.Sasikumar Assistant Professor / Civil Engineering. At the end students was aware about the usage of code books
YUVA Chapter
Excel Engineering College -Autonomous in collaboration with Young India of Erode, has unveiled several positions within different verticals to ensure the seamless functioning of the YUVA Chapter on 09.08.2023. In particular, the Civil Engineering department has taken charge of the Climate Change vertical. V.Enathamilan, a fourth-year student, has been appointed as the YUVA Chair for this vertical, while S.Priyadarshini, a third-year student, has assumed the role of YUVA Co Chair. The responsibility for this batch was entrusted to them by Srimathi Raghunathan, the Head of Erode YUVA Chapter. Their dedication and efforts are greatly appreciated
SketchUp & Lumion (Civil & Architecture) software Workshop
Fifteen students from III Year Civil Engineering , Excel Engineering College accompanied by our faculty Mr. S. Arunkumar, actively participated in the SketchUp & Lumion (Civil & Architecture) software Workshop conducted by C Cube Technologies in Erode on July 30, 2023. During the workshop, the students gained valuable insights into the basic concepts of these software programs, which will undoubtedly prove advantageous for their academic and professional pursuits

Er K.Nandhagopal, Senior Technical Officer, Chettinad Cements has addressed on the Various Grades of cement, Manufacturing process, Properties of aggregate and Concrete.
Also brought the Chettinad Mobile Testing unit to our campus and demonstrated the tests on cement such as Consistency, Initial, Final setting time, Air permeability, Tests on aggregate such as Sieve analysis of fine and Coarse aggregate, Slump test on Concrete, Compressive Strength of Concrete and Non Destructive Test on Concrete using Rebound hammer to all our students. Our students clarified their doubts related to various field tests on Construction materials conducted at the construction site on 25.08.2023 at APJ Hall

On this occasion, Dr John Britto, Proprietor, PMK Constructions & G Xavier Associates, Dalmiapuram, Trichy addressed on the Qualities of Successful Entrepreneur such as Creativity, Professionalism, Risk taking, Passion, Perfect Planning, Updated knowledge, Social Skills,

Title: “Conquering Heights: Seminar on Hilly Terrain Construction” Summarizing the seminar held on February 23, 2024, industry leaders explored challenges in mountainous construction. Dr. N. Mathan Raj, Managing Director of Infra Arch Constructions, Ooty, shared pivotal insights. External and internal participants engaged in discussions on innovative solutions. The event culminated in an MOU signing with Infra Arch Constructions, solidifying commitments to tackle mountainous construction challenges. Certificates were presented to external participants, signifying a successful collaboration.

On 21.02.2024, an Academic Guest Lecture on “Advancements in Sustainable Wastewater Treatment: Navigating Environmental Solutions” was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering. The lecture was delivered by Dr. N. Ramesh, an esteemed expert in the field of wastewater treatment, from KSRCT. In the Lecture, Waste water from Daily activities, Commercial activities and Industrial activities were explained. The discharge of waste water into water bodies such as Ponds, Lakes, Streams, River and Sea were mentioned. The waste water treatment methods like Physical method, Chemical method and Biological method were highlighted. Following the lecture, attendees had the opportunity to visit our Sewage Treatment plant and demonstrated the effective use of wastewater in the agricultural field .The event facilitated sharing of knowledge on waste water treatment and the importance of adopting sustainable practices in wastewater management to protect the environment and ensure a sustainable future.

As part of the Institution of Engineers (India)-Salem Local Centre’s 30th-anniversary celebrations, we Ms.D.Mythili AP Civil & Mrs.K.Poornima AP Civil recently on 11.04.2024 had the privilege of embarking on a fascinating technical visit to the Milky Mist Dairy Food Pvt. Ltd. Plant at Perundurai.
It was an experience like no other, filled with insights and inspiration. From the moment we stepped foot into the facility, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality, symbolized by the refreshing welcome drink before and after our visit that awaited us.
Guided by knowledgeable hosts, we were taken on a comprehensive tour, delving into every aspect of the dairy industry’s intricate processes.What struck us most was the impeccable cleanliness and organization maintained throughout the plant.
Despite being a bustling food industry, there was not a hint of unpleasant odors, a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and hygiene standards upheld by the team at Milky Mist.The discipline and professionalism exhibited by the workers were commendable, reflecting the values of dedication and excellence instilled within the organization.
Moreover, the tranquil interior design and picturesque landscaping provided a serene backdrop to our learning experience.
Behind the scenes, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the visionaries, the driving forces SATHISHKUMAR T Anitha Sathish Kumar who have turned Milky Mist Milky Mist Dairy into a beacon of success and innovation. Mr.S.Sasikumar AP Civil, one of our dedicated staff member, recently accompanied our third-year students to the Excel Public School Swimming Pool construction site on 17.04.2024. He provided invaluable insights into floor concrete, PCC, ingredient selection, mix proportioning, mixing techniques, compaction methods, leveling, and surface finishing. Sharing knowledge and experiences to nurture the next generation of builders!

Manickavasagam, President of Technical Renatus Renacon Private Limited, as our esteemed speaker. During the session, Er. Manickavasagam showcased his company’s innovative products, demonstrating their properties and discussing their advantages and applications. The interactive nature of the session allowed for engaging discussions and valuable insights into the realm of sustainable construction.Events like these not only enrich our knowledge but also inspire us to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future. “Our Civil Engineering Department hosted a seminar titled ‘Substructures (Foundation) for Wind Farms and Transmission Towers’ at APJ Hall. During this event, Er. Saravana Kumar, representing Construction Quality Services at S.K. Solutions & Lead Construction in Wind Plus, Coimbatore, delivered a presentation covering various aspects of wind power plants. His presentation included insights on the operation of wind power plants, wind resource assessment, wind mast installation, wind resource grid analysis, contour mapping, wind farm project management, site surveys, soil investigations, construction of retaining walls and culverts, as well as quality testing methods such as rebound hammer tests, ultrasonic tests, and impact echo testing/pile integrity tests.” on 5.4.24

On April 2nd, 2024, the Department of Civil Engineering at S. R University in Telangana hosted a seminar centered on “Green Building Materials for Sustainable Construction.” Dr. G. Shyamala, Professor and Dean of the Planning Department of Civil Engineering, delivered a comprehensive address at the event. She elaborated on the myriad advantages of utilizing green building materials, including earthen materials, wood, bamboo, structural insulated panels, insulated concrete form, cordwood, straw bale, earth bed, slate, steel, thatch, composites, natural fiber, fiberglass, cellulose, cork, and natural clay. Dr. Shyamala also delved into strategies to enhance resource efficiency and reduce the environmental and health impacts of buildings throughout their life cycle through improved siting, design, and construction practices.

The Erode District Civil Engineers Association has initiated a Career Hub aimed at enhancing Civil Engineering knowledge and fostering professional development through collaboration with Engineering Colleges. As part of this initiative, they offer internships in diverse construction projects for Civil Engineering students. Recently, on March 31, 2024, they extended an invitation to Civil Engineering faculty members. Our faculty, Mrs.N. Mythily and Mr.S.Arunkumar, Assistant Professors Civil participated in the program and were honored with the Career Hub Enrollment certificate.

In his inaugural address, highlighted the salient features of Intelligent Transport System. After inauguration, the Chief Guest addressed on the topic ‘Multi Modal and Public Transportation Management’ Explained the Wireless, Electronic and Automated Technologies in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). On 22.03.2024 Afternoon session Handled by Dr Marisaminathan, Associate Dean, NIT, Trichy addressed on ‘Behavioural Science, Application, Techniques in ITS and Automated vehicles ‘Human factors, Indian road users, Lack on design and provisions, Pedestrian facility were presented. Conceptual model of ITS, Objectives of ITS, Concept of Data flow for ITS application, Various Sensors and Technologies, Advanced Travel Information Systems (ATIS), Monitoring Driver behaviour, Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA), Distraction warning system and ITS measures to reduce crashes were described. On 23.03.2024 Forenoon session Handled by Dr Murugesan, Principal, Government College of Engineering, Erode addressed on ‘Human factors, Driver behavior, Emission, Noise and Environment. In his address, Monitoring Driver to perform driving tasks, Driving style characteristics, Tracking, Monitoring, Analysis of Driver behavior, Intelligent Detection System, Environment and health impacts of traffic related pollution were discussed in detail. On 23.03.2024 Afternoon session Handled by Professor Dr Naveen Ganesh, Professor PSG ITECH, Coimbatore addressed on ‘Traffic flow theory, Emergencies and Accidents’. In his address, Traffic flow, Traffic Volume, Density, Time Space Diagram, Fundamental relations of Traffic flow, Highway Capacity, Passenger Car Unit, Traffic Conflicts or Manoeuvres, Road Accidents, Safety Audit, Channelization, Guard rail, Signs, Signals, Guide Post, Reflectors, Flyover, Bypass and Enforcement measures were presented. Finally Mrs.N.Mythily, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, delivered the vote of thanks. The program arranged by Dr.S.Shanmugasundaram & Mrs. N.Mythily AP Civil Department. Faculty of Civil Department has done all the needful arrangements for the successful conduct of the programme.

Department of Civil Engineering organised the Inauguration of IEI Students Chapter, Installation function of Office bearers & Seminar on ‘Unlocking opportunities, The
Significance of IEI Membership on 6.5.2024.
On this occasion, Dr K. Thangaraj, FIE , Chairman, IEI Salem Local Centre has inaugurated the IEI Students chapter, Office bearers were introduced and distributed the IEI Students Membership card and the Students Chapter certificate. In his inaugural address, explained that IEI is the largest multidisciplinary Professional body of Engineers encompassing 15 Engineering disciplines. Highlighted the outstanding achievements of Sir Visveswaraya who invented the Block system, automated doors that close in the conditions of overflow. He is the Chief Engineer for the construction of Krishna Raja Sagar dam in Mysore and Chief Designer of flood protection system for Hyderabad City.
In his Seminar address, conduction of various Technical programs, Seminar, Workshop, FDP, Convention and Conference etc through IEI Centres at State, National and International level.
Support Centres, Institute Industry Networking sessions, Networking opportunities, Open tools, Internship and Professional Development activities were specifically mentioned. Also pointed out the funding proposal and scholarship.
