Creation of Green Campus

Objective:

Our college spearheads the green campus program to champion a sustainable, climate-friendly environment. Objectives include providing a healthy environment for stakeholders, building a sustainable ecosystem, and reducing single-use plastics. The initiative aims to sensitize younger generations about green cover importance, involve students and staff in green projects, incorporate environmental sustainability into the curriculum, and enhance public transportation options.

The Context:

Amidst the global environmental crisis, raising mass awareness is crucial for minimizing damages. Acknowledging the proactive stance of today’s youth in taking responsibility for environmental protection, our institution is actively promoting a green campus. There’s a growing demand from students, faculty, staff, and the wider community for institutions to commit to environmental responsibility. The concept of a green campus emphasizes efficient resource use, waste reduction, pollution minimization, and economic efficiency, aligning with social responsibility to foster a sustainable and environmentally conscious community.

The Practice:

Our Institution is committed to environmental sustainability, evident through various green initiatives. An Herbal Garden engages students in planting and caring for diverse plants, fostering hands-on learning. Energy conservation campaigns promote responsible use of lights and electronics, with encouragement for public transportation and restricted automobile entry on campus. Regular clean-up days involve students, faculty, and staff, contributing to a litter-free environment. Eco-friendly programs, including planting around 140 medicinal plants around the campus.

The curriculum integrates Environmental Science as a Non-Major Elective Course for first-year students, educating them on carbon sequestration’s role. An Eco-club facilitates student involvement in planning green initiatives, providing a platform for sustainability discussions. Supporting public transportation and electric vehicles makes pollution-free campus. The Herbal Garden is a resource for Siddha Maruthuvam courses and Bioscience Department projects. Practical environmental protection instructions are reinforced through NSS, YRC, and Yi, showcasing the institution’s dedication to a sustainable and eco-friendly campus

Evidence of Success:

The green campus integrates hands-on learning in sustainability with modern technology through an e-governance system, ensuring paperless communication in administrative processes. Circulars on scholarships, fees, and announcements are disseminated via domain G-mail account, and ERP software like Auto Lib, Camu, HR Wallet, and NPF. The Herbal Garden is an educational resource, incorporates Siddha Maruthuvam in the curriculum and hosts conferences for active student participation. QR codes enable plant identification, and faculty members in Textile and Fashion Designing secured a patent for the green synthesis of Zinc oxide nanoparticles. The green environment enhances learning, with Microbiology Department projects focusing on antimicrobial activities of fruits and leaf extracts, fostering environmental consciousness and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Problems Encountered:

Maintaining the Herbal Garden during semester vacations poses challenges in gardening student support. The prevalence of plastic in packaging junk foods at Excel Fusion Café complicates zero plastic efforts. Busy academic schedules may constrain student participation in green activities. Achieving sustainability requires not only financial investment but also a collective commitment from all stakeholders to overcome these challenges.

Students’ Social activity for the general well-being in Centre for Rural Development.

Objective:

Motivate students for holistic development, improving healthcare and education in rural areas. Focus on literacy, occasional training, and empowering women and youth for socio-economic growth. Programs aim at raising awareness on various issues, fostering global citizenship, and encouraging students’ interaction with communities for heightened social awareness and participation in charitable activities.

The Context:

Extension efforts are pivotal in disseminating new concepts and technology across diverse populations, enriching rich and disadvantaged rural, tribal, and urban communities. Rooted in social science, it employs methods to modify behavioral patterns, uplifting living standards. The initiative unites rural communities for social betterment, contributing to national development. Extension activities foster leadership and cooperation, benefiting students and the institute holistically, and extending beyond academics.

The Practice:

The college’s NSS and YRC clubs actively engage in numerous outreach initiatives. Activities include health camps, blood donation drives, and awareness campaigns in rural schools. Seminars on social work and hygiene, along with periodic distributions of essentials to street and rural children, promote health consciousness.

Religious organizations contribute aid for natural disasters. Regular events like blood donations, anti-drug awareness, voter awareness, and medical camps are organized by NSS, YRC, and Yi. The college funds and supports rural schools, emphasizing the importance of higher education. Faculty visits to rural schools address students’ needs, fostering a conducive learning environment.

Participating in the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), the college plans to adopt villages and collaborate on sustainable solutions for health, education, livelihood, and more. UBA aims to enhance rural quality of life. Celebrating National Education Day, our college organized an outreach program on “Digital Literacy for Rural People” in Pallipalayam. Students presented science-related programs, receiving commendation from the Pallipalayam Municipality Commissioner. The initiative aligns with UBA’s goal to connect education institutions with communities for sustainable rural development. The college’s comprehensive outreach efforts contribute significantly to community well-being and development.

Evidence of Success:

The college has achieved higher literacy rates and improved educational attainment, notably among rural students, leading to increased enrollment and retention rates, particularly for girls and marginalized groups. Collaboration with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) is in progress, reinforcing the commitment to rural development. The college received a certificate of appreciation from the Pallipalayam Municipality, Government of Tamil Nadu for improving literacy in rural areas. Success indicators include advancements in education infrastructure, increased enrollment, improved health outcomes, and environmental sustainability efforts. Active involvement of students in higher education, skill development, and future success demonstrates the positive impact of the college’s initiatives on rural communities.

Problems Encountered:

Insufficient partnerships with NGOs, government agencies, or local businesses further impede support to rural areas. Rural development strives to enhance rural lives through active participation of the community, addressing specific needs. Education plays a pivotal role, enabling rural residents to engage actively in their sustainable development through an integrated approach. Insufficient awareness about healthcare practices and preventive measures poses health challenges in rural areas. Additionally, students in rural regions contend with challenging study conditions, which can hinder their educational pursuits.
